Visiting Dr Michael J Mar Fan’s Sunnybank clinic? Here’s what you need to know before your consultation or procedure. Preparation is key to ensuring a smooth and safe experience.
What to bring
GP referral letter
Medicare, DVA Gold, and private health insurance cards
Relevant reports: X-rays, scans, DVDs, colonoscopy results
Method of payment (cash or credit cards)
Before Your Surgery
Pre-op fasting
- Most procedures require fasting for 6 hours before
- Colonoscopy: Only 2 hours fast as you’ll be on clear fluids the day before
Medications
- Regular meds (except blood thinners) can usually be taken as normal
- On blood thinners or diabetic medications? Check with Dr Mar Fan ahead of time
Bowel prep
- For bowel-related issues, please empty your bowels prior to arrival
- Use a glycerine suppository if required
After Your Surgery
Post-op consultation
Please contact the clinic as soon as you return home to book your follow-up. If time is tight, you can also email us your questions.
Wound care
- Abdominal wounds: Dissolving sutures with skin glue, no removal needed
- Bottom area wounds: Clean with salty water or dilute Dettol twice daily
- Use sanitary pad between washes for comfort
Pain relief
- A script for painkillers and a mild laxative will be provided upon discharge
- Avoid prolonged use of opioids to prevent addiction
Ice therapy
- For anal wounds, use an ice pack for 10–15 minutes every hour while lying down
